‘To belt or not to belt’ is a question many of my clients ask me.
Some women are short waisted and others may be long waisted. Whether you have a defined or undefined waist is another factor to be considered when dressing your waist. None of this is dependent on your size. The answer to this depends on your body shape and body proportions. Body shape is determined by your skeletal structure and how your shoulders, waist and hips relate to each other. Not all body shapes look great wearing belts as some people have a less defined waist and are more straight up and down.
How to determine if you are short waisted- Being short waisted means you do not have a lot of space between the top of your hip bone & the bottom of your rib cage. Your natural waist sits fairly close to your under bust area.
Let’s look at how to dress a defined short waist and how the type of belt and colour can affect the look.
A narrow belt works well for a short waist because it doesn’t take up as much space as a wider belt and will make you look more balanced. A wide belt may feel uncomfortable and definitely not be as flattering as a narrow one.
Tucking your tops in can sometimes create a cut off look and make your waist appear shorter than it is, especially if you wear a belt in a contrasting colour.
Wearing your top out and belting over the top creates a waist focus while giving the illusion of lengthening your torso.
- A belt in a contrasting colour will draw more attention to your waist area.
- A belt in a colour that coordinates with your outfit will provide waist detail without being a focus.
- A curved hip belt can also lengthen your torso. Remember when you wear a belt in a contrasting colour this creates a focus point.
- Wearing an outfit in one colour with the same coloured belt will create a taller and slimmer look.
